Scott Hembree
Date of Birth: Jan.6,1960
Place of Birth: San Diego
Residence: Chandler
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 190
Race Category: R3-T3-45
About Scott:
I raced BMX ages 13 and 14 Tried 250 novice MX racing at age 15 till
my brother in law crashed really bad. Started road riding at age 16
and was dropped and lapped all 1976 season 1977 finished most races
and took a top ten finish by the end of the year. I kept training
hard all through the winter that year. 1978 I Won the first race of
the season along with a bunch of others including junior state road
race at Camp Pendleton and tt at Lake Elsinor. 1979 was my first year
as a senior. Myself and Thurlow Rogers both started as category 2
riders and were cat. 1 a month or so later. That year, with Kevin
Lutz, Paul Deem and Mark Whitehead I was national champion in the
4000m team pursuit at Northbrook IL. I was also second in the Santa
Barbara Grand Prix which was a national prestige classic (now NRC)and
won a few crits and placed top five in most that year in SoCal. Two
races I can remember winning that year were Tustin Dog Days Criterium
with lots of screaming spectators (gotta love those screaming spectators)
and Mexicali-San Felipe with even more screaming spectators and folks
banging on pots. There was a winners jersey and banquet (gotta love
Mexican racing!!). 1980 was my best year except that the Soviets invaded
Afghanistan and we boycotted the Olympics. There were six of us on
the team pursuit squad and the boycott demoralized all of us. I won
the points race that year at the national championships in San Diego.
We botched the team pursuit so I just went out for blood, made daring
attacks and got lucky I suppose. I won Manhattan Beach that year and
a few other really cool races but I forget all of their names. 1981
was a weird year full of illness and mishaps and much change. I clocked
my fastest ever 4000m individual pursuit going under five minutes
at national championships at Trexlertown but I ended up with chronic
fatigue syndrome and rode inconsistently. That year I won a few crits
and took the Downtown Bonneventure Criterium which was a NRC by taking
a flyer with two laps to go 1982 I took the year to get well and rode
21 miles to work and 21 miles home all year, never racing or showing
up at a training ride. 1983 I started racing again mostly concentrating
on the track since we by then had three velodromes in SoCal and we
could race at San Diego Wed. night, Domingues Hills Friday nite and
Encino Saturday night. I won the state championships in the 50k points
race on a hot windy afternoon in San Diego by riding a 49X15 and not
bothering to really contest any early sprints. I lapped the field
twice when ten or so miles had passed and folks got tired. I did make
the podium in the elite men's road race that year at Lake Elsinor
a few minutes behind now world champion Thurlow Rogers. I then took
20 years away from the sport working with different missions organizations
in Mexico, Central and South America and here in the states. After
my wife was unfaithful with a Chilean Pastor I returned to the states
and decided to get back in shape (it has been a slow process). In
2003 I won the 1000m and 3000m master's tt events in state championships
on the velodrome. In 2004 I won the Cat. 5 race at Hungry Dog Crit
in Tempe and placed top five till I moved up to cat. 4. I was third
in the North End Classic enjoying the crit in the rain and meeting
my current life partner afterward who was also mud speckled from doing
her event in the rain. In 2005 I won the points race at the state
championships 25 years after winning the same event in the national
championships on the same San Diego Velodrome. That year I was second
in the master's race at the first annual "Patent It! Summer Heat Criterium"
and fourth in the category 4 event. It was there I first saw and later
befriended a fellow who talked me into joining Patent It!

Bike: 2008 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert
Riding Preference: Road – mountain XC – mountain DH-

drivers license. Fortunately he got back into bikes while attending
college at Northern Arizona University. Not a highly competitive rider,
Mark hasn’t entered many races in the past but always enjoys the atmosphere.
But this year, instead of being just the mechanic, you might just find
him on the racetrack.

Brian Willess
Nickname: Chilly Willie
Sex: Male
Age: 43
Riding Preference: Mountain XC, Endurance
Bikes: 08 Epic Expert
Bio:
Back when I was attending ASU (95 – 98) I got into mountain
biking. Since graduating I had not ridden at all until 2007
when I started to ride again with a friend from work. I was
having a hard time keeping up with him, he could go much faster on
the downhill slopes, he had a full suspension bike, and I had to slow
down to keep my hard tail from bouncing off the trail. So for
my 2008 birthday I got a new Specialized Epic Expert from Global Bikes.
Since I had a new bike and a new outlet for my energy, I decided that
I wanted to try my hand at Mountain Bike Racing, I can be a little
competitive sometimes (that’s an understatement). I joined
my biking friend and entered my first race. I've been finishing in
respectable positions for my class, the 40-49 Beginner men's class.
My goal for this year is to get booted into the Sport class next year.
I’ll need 3 top 5 finishes to make this happen.
I’m an adrenalin junky, past hobbies include Snow Skiing, Skydiving,
Catamaran Sailing, and driving my 1970 Porsche 914-6 on the track.
My current hobbies are Windsurfing, Scuba Diving, and Mountain Biking.
I love the exercise I get with Biking and the thrill of speed just
makes it that much better.
I currently ride at least twice a week. My favorite ride is
Desert Classic to Secret to the heli-pad, back on Desert Classic to
the Warpaint loop, then back to the Pima parking area. I don’t
enjoy the steep technical climbs as much as cross country, but I’m
working on forcing myself to do more of that type of riding.
If I’m not on the trail I’ll take a spin class at the
gym.
